Ana Sagar
Ana Sagar an artificial lake at Ajmer was enhanced by Jahangir and Shah Jahan
who added marble baradaris and pavilions.
Foy Sagar Lake
The Foy Sagar Lake also at Ajmer is an artificial lake famous for its famine
relief project. Pushkar Lake Quiet and tranquil, Pushkar is a haven for tourists
searching for respite. Ghats lead down to the water to enable pilgrims to bathe.
The only Brahma Temple in the country is situated at the further end of the
lake. Ramgarh Lake
Situated 35 kms way from Jaipur, the Ramgarh Lake is an artificial lake surrounded
by hills and a dam. Overlooking the lake is a hunting lodge with a museum.
Jait Sagar Lake
The Jait Sagar Lake at Bundi has Sukh Niwas, a summer palace.
Nawal Sagar Lake
The Nawal Sagar Lake has in its centre, a half-submerged temple to Varuna,
and the god of water. The lake surface beautifully reflects the entire town
and palace of Bundi.
Lake Gandalan
On the shores of Lake Gandalan at Kishangarh stands the fort palace with its
Hathi Pol and walls decorated with murals.
Balsamand Lake
Situated in Jodhpur, the Balsam and Lake is surrounded by gardens laid
out in 1936 in European style. A 19th century pavilion with traditional and
beautiful carved red sand stone facings in European style was also constructed
here.
Lake Pichola
Surrounded by hills, palaces, temples, bathing ghats and embankments, Lake Pichola
is the scenic focus of Udaipur. The lake has two island palaces-Jag Mandir and
Jag Niwas. The Jag Mandir, was built during the reign of Karan Singh in red
sand stone with a marble dome, Shah Jahan has supposed to have lived in this
island when he was in revolt against his father, Jahangir. European ladies and
children were also given sanctuary during the Mutiny. Jag Niwas was the summer
residence of the princes of Mewar, now converted into a hotel.
Fateh Sagar Lake
Also situated in Udaipur, the Fateh Sagar Lake was constructed in 1678 during
the reign of Maharana Jai Singh and was modified by Maharana Fateh Singh. The
lake offers a pleasant lakeside drive along the east bank. Jaisam and Lake 52
kms south east of Udaipur, the lake was constructed in the late 17th century.
The lake was the second largest artificial lake in Asia before the construction
of the dams. Low hills and summer palaces of the Ranis of Udaipur surround the
lake.
Nakki Lake
The Nakki Lake is the only one of its kind other than the lakes in the Himalayas
that exists at 1,200m above sea level. Rajsamand Lake Situated 66 kms away from
Udaipur, the Rajsamand Lake has Nav Chowki, a pillared edifice paved in marble
with beautiful carved chattris and arches.
GUJARAT
Nalsarovar Lake
The Nalsarovar Lake situated in Saurashtra is surrounded by reed beds and marshes;
and is noted for its water birds. Some indigenous species come here after breeding
but it's the migratory ducks, flamingoes and geese that are the main attraction.
Saputara Lake
Set in a forested tribal region, the long walks along the beautiful lake are
a treat, near the Mahal Bardipura wildlife sanctuary. One can indulge in rowing
and paddle boating in the calm waters of the Saputara Lake.
Khijadia Lake
Situated 10 kms northeast of Jamnagar, the three freshwater lakes, surrounded
by saltpans and salt marshes are rich with bird life. Primarily a migratory
post for birds, swallows, martins, wagtails and waterfowls are often seen here.
Entirely flooded in the wet season, the lakes remain fresh throughout the dry
season and occasionally dries out.
Gaurishankar Lake
Gaurishankar Lake is a popular lake situated in the hilltop of Bhavnagar, a
coastal town and seaport.
