Pulicat Lake
On the border of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, the Pulicat Lake is the
second largest lagoon in India. 84% of the lake is situated in Andhra Pradesh
while the remaining part lies in Tamil Nadu. The lake has large concentrations
of water birds and crustaceans. Sriharikotta Island is noted for its launching
site for satellites.
Durgum Cheruvu
The 'secret lake' of Hyderabad, Durgum Cheruvu is a dazzling lake surrounded
by mammoth hillocks. Hussain Sagar Lake 16 m deep, this lake is a premier attraction
of Hyderabad, and was built in gratitude in honour of Husain Shah Wali. There
is a mammoth granite statue of the Buddha in the middle of the lake.
Pakhal Lake
74 km from Warrangal is the Pakhal Lake, situated close to the medieval Deccan
Ramappa Temple dating back to 1213 AD. The tranquil man made lake has a wildlife
sanctuary.
KERALA
Neyyar Lake
The Neyyar Lake at Thiruvananthapuram is a picnic spot with a dam, crocodile
farm, lion safari and wildlife sanctuary.
Pookote Lake
Pookote Lake a fresh water lake is wide and deep surrounded by meadows and hills.
Ashtamudi Lake
The Ashtamudi Lake with coconut palms on its bank and picturesque promontories
is situated in Kollam.
TAMIL NADU
Ooty Lake
The Ooty Lake, originally constructed as an irrigation tank, although artificial,
looks beautifully natural. The wide lake is said to be shrinking and is now
about 2.5 kms long and between 100m and 140m wide. Pony rides and boating facilities
add colour to the scene.
Kodaikanal Lake
The Kodaikanal Lake covers a substantial 24 ha in a star-shape surrounded
by wooded slopes. There are attractive walks around the lake. Boating is a popular
pastime and one can fish with permission. Kodaikanal is 120kms. from Madurai.
Berijam Lake
21 kms. from Kodaikanal, the Berijam Lake is a beautiful lake with a breathtaking
view. A road runs past the Golf course and Pillar rocks to Berijam .The lake
supplies drinking water to a town called Periyakulam.
Neelapattu Lake
The Neelapattu Lake at Chennai has an important bird sanctuary with a breeding
colony of spotbilled pelicans.
