MEGHALAYA
Umiam Lake
Alternatively known as 'Barapani', legend goes on to say that the creation of
the lake was a result of tears of a sister separated from another sister. The
lake provides facilities such as boating, fishing and other water sports.
Ward Lake
Situated in the heart of Shillong, the horseshoe shaped Ward Lake is set in
a landscaped botanical garden and is an ideal spot for boating.
Thadalskein Lake
56 km from Shillong the Thadlaskein Lake is said to have been dug with arrowheads
by the followers of a Jaintia king, and is a popular picnic spot with boating
facilities.

Gyaker Lake
Near Itanagar, Gyaker Sinyi, also known as the Ganga Lake is surrounded by forests
and is ideal for picnics and boating.
MANIPUR
Waithou Lake
Situated 16 km from Imphal, on the Indo-Burma road, the picturesque lake is
by a village known for its pineapples.
Loktak Lake
48 km from Imphal, the Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the northeast.
Dotted with floating islands, water plants, boats, fisherman houses and swamps,
the lake is one of the rarest of its kind.
ORISSA
Chilika Lake
Situated in the heart of coastal Orissa, is the largest inland lake in the country
and Asia's largest saltwater lake. Covering an area of 1,100 sq. km, across
Puri and Ganjam districts, the Chilika Lake forms an enormous blue lagoon, joined
with the Bay of Bengal with a narrow mouth. The lake with a number of lush green
islands is the winter home to many migratory birds from Persia and Siberia.
Birds such as the white-bellied sea eagles, ospreys, sandpipers, pelicans, gulls,
flamingos and golden plovers can be often sighted. The rich aquatic fauna tempts
the fishermen to come in search of crabs and prawns here. The lake also has
a temple of its deity at one of the islands here.
SIKKIM
Khenchupelri Lake
Lying in a depression formed by surrounding hills, the Khenchupelri Lake is
believed to be a sacred lake. The rich forest around the lake is a major attraction
for visitors. Trekker huts are easily available here.
Tsomgo Lake
40 km from Gangtok is the sacred Tsomgo Lake.
TRIPURA
Rudrasagar Lake
The Rudrasagar Lake has a water-palace. The lake seems like a fairytale castle
with towers, pavilions, moats and bridges.
WEST BENGAL
Sumendu Lake
About 1.25 km long, the Sumendu Lake is a major attraction. The large promenade
around the lake and the 80 feet long arched over bridge make the lake even more
interesting to see.
Senchal Lake
Situated close to the Tiger hill is the Senchal Lake, which supplies Darjeeling
with water.
