ANDAMAN
& NICOBAR ISLANDS
The union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands has 293 islands (39 inhabited)
and is situated in the Bay of Bengal. The Andaman group of islands consists,
among others, North Andaman, Middle Andaman, South Andaman and Little Andaman.
The Nicobar group has Great Nicobar, Dar Nicobar, Nancowry, Katchal and Chowra.
The capital is Port Blair on South Andaman. The Central Jail here was the most
feared one during British reign in India. Andaman took the sobriquet Kalapani
(black water), a reference to the blood that was shed there. The islands are
hilly and abound in evergreen forests. The white sandy beaches lead to deep
blue waters with coral reefs and an amazing underwater life. The Andamans provide
the perfect site for snorkeling and deep sea diving and for relaxing, far from
the maddening crowd.
