in 1972, Meghalaya (The Abode of Clouds) is the home of the Khasi, Jaintia and
Garo tribes,people. Great stone monoliths erected to the old tribal kings can
be found in the Khasi ad Jaintia hills, as well as sacmaroon forest groves.The
gently rolling hills of the state are noted for growing fruit and betel nut.The hill station of Shillong is the state Capital, while Cherrapunji, 58 km south, was until recently said to be the wettest place on earth, with an average annual rainfall of 1150cm-nearly 40 feet. Area: 22, 429 sq kms. The Capital of this state is Shillong. Important Cities and Towns: East Khasi Hill, West Lhasi Hill, East Garo Hill,West Garo Hill,, South Garo Hill. Places of Tourist Interest: Jowai, Jakrem, Tura, Shillong, Ranigodam, Cherrapunji, Jaintia Hills, Mawsynram, Jakrem, Umiam Lake, Mairang. Best Time To Visit: October to March Airports: Barapani. Rail: Guwahati is the nearest railhead. Road: Shillong is well connected by road to other neighbouring states and cities. Cherrapunji: This is the wettest place in the world due to heavy rainfall throughout the year. It is situated at an altitude of 1,300 metres and about 56 kms from Shillong Cherrapunji. High but absolutely beautiful waterfalls drop into deep gorges with a roar. Jaintia Hills: Jowai, the headquarters of the Jaintia Hills is situated about 6 km from Shillong, and is circled by majestic Myntdu river. Mawsynram: 56kms from Shillong, Mawsynram is famous for the giant stalagmite formations shaped like shivalings, locally called Mawjymbuim Jakrem: 64kms from Shillong, the place is a popular health resort with hot spring of sulphur water believed to have curative powers.Mairang: About 14km from Shillong, is famous for the home of the Raja of Nongkhlaw who spearheaded a war against the British.
