Kerala Ayurveda TreatmentPanchakarma Treatment Method 3. Recovery Stage The patient is allowed seven days rest after Basti. During this period he is put on a light vegetarian diet. 4. Nasal Medication/Nasya Nasya is the procedure in which medications are administered through the nostril in order to purify the head and neck region. The medicines used for this procedure are oil, pastes, powers, plant juice, decoctions, infusions and even smoke. Methods of administration; 1) Preliminary procedure: Nasya usually follows Vamana, Virichana and Basti. There is a one day rest period between the completion of these procedures and nasya. The patient is first asked to empty the bladder and bowels; take a light meal if the patient is hungry and then the teeth is cleansed. Following this suitable oil is applied on face, forehead, shoulder and nasal region and then hot water fomentation is carried out. 2) Main procedure: The patient is made to lie down on a straight bed, keeping a pillow below his neck to bring nose in front and face in little lower position. Then the warmed liquid medicine or oil is taken in a special container or dropper. The left nostril is closed and four to eight drops are put in the right nostril and the patient is asked to inhale. The same process is repeated in the left nostril by closing the right nostril. Nasya can prevent diseases of ear, nose, throat and head; it is effective for treating diseases like falling of hairs, headache, migraine, and facial paralysis. 5. Rakta Moksha (Blood letting) Bloodletting is an invasive procedure; hence only a licensed physician should administer it. This treatment is used only for the treatment of blood related and Pitta related disorders such as skin, liver spleen and conditions like gout, headaches and hypertension. Jalauka (leeches) is the most renowned method of blood letting and the mildest of all types .It is still used today for children, women the elderly wealthy princely and other delicate patients. It is a safe, painless and effective form of treatment. Bloodletting is also known to stimulate the production and release from the blood vessels, lymphatic, and bone marrow many anti-oxidants and pro-immune substances, which inactivate and destroy toxins. Bloodletting is a powerful and radical detoxification procedure capable of restoring the vitality of the individual.
