PRINCE
OF WALES MUSEUM - MUMBAI
Prince Of Wales Museum, between Colaba and Fort, was built to commemorate King
George V's first visit to India in 1905 while he was still Prince of Wales, though
it did not open till 1923. Designed by George Wittet in Grand Indo-Saracenic style,
it is set in an ornamental garden and boasts an impressive galleried Central Hall
topped by a huge dome, said to have been inspired by the Golgumbaz in Bijapur.
Its collection includes artefacts from Elephanta Island and Jogeshwari caves,
terracotta figurines from the Indus Valley, ivory carvings, statues, and a huge
range of miniatures. The Museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10.15 am
to 6 pm.
Access: Sahar International airport has international & domestic terminals.
The airport is 38 kms from the city. Pre-paid taxi services, information counters
for hotels, travel agency services are available at the airport.
AURANGABAD
This is the base of for one of the most splendid tourist destinations- the Ellora
and Ajanta Caves. The Ellora Caves are exquisite cave temples of almost 34 caves,
with intricate interiors, and ornamental facades. The rock temple and monasteries
represent three faiths - Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. At Aurangabad, named
after Aurangzeb, the last Mughal Emperor stands an impregnable fort. There is
also a Taj Mahal look-alike mausoleum. Also worth a visit is the fascinating
50, 000 year old meteorite impact crater.
Access: By road it is 388kms from Mumbai. MTDC & ITDC luxury coaches operate
daily. Indian Airlines connects daily. Jalagaon 59kms away links Aurangabad
to Mumbai.
Rani Mahal - Jhansi
The former palace of Rani Lakshmibai, consisting of chambers
around an open courtyard, was built in the 18th century. The building is now
a museum containing hundreds of sculptures.
Government Museum - Jhansi
The pathway leading to the fort is the Government museum. Its four galleries
house an interesting collection of prehistoric tools; terracottas dating from
the 4th century B.C., and sculptures, costumes and weapons from the Chandela
Dynasty.
