MUSEUM - CALCUTTA The Indian Museum was built in 1875. It's certainly the largest and probably the best Museum in India, and one of the best in Asia. The widely varied collection includes oddities such as a roomful of meteorites. Other exhibits include the usual fossils, stuffed animals and skeletons. There are a number of unique fossil skeletons of prehistoric animals, among them are giant crocodiles and an amazingly big tortoise. The art collection has many fine pieces from Orissan and other temples, and superb examples of Buddhist Gandharan art - an interesting meeting point between Greek artistry and Buddhist ideals that produced Buddha images and other sculptures of great beauty. The museum is open daily except Monday from 10 am to 5 pm. From December to February it closes half an hour earlier. Access: DumDum Airport has international & domestic terminals. It is connected to major international & domestic airports. The airport is 20kms from the city. Pre- paid taxi services, information counters for the hotels, travel agency services are available at the airport.
