lake city surrounded by 7 hills (Ayarpata, Deopata, Handi-Bandi, Naina, Alma,
Lariya-Kanta & Sher-Ka-Danda) known as 'Sapta-Shring'. The place derives its name
from Naina Lake, around which the town is located. According to the legends, when
Siva sorrowfully carried away the corpse of his first wife, Shakti, her body disintegrated
and her eyes fell here. This place is also known as the 'Lake District' of India,
because of the numerous lakes spread around in the district. The natural beauty
and tranquil landscape of Nainital are unmatched along with a large variety of
flora and fauna. This place used to be the summer capital of the United Provinces
during the British period and remained so for many years even after independence.
The place has religious and historical sites, wildlife reserve, fruit orchards,
picturesque landscape, peaks, etc to allure a tourist. Major tourist attractions
are Naina Peak, Naina Devi Temple, Naini Lake, Snow-View, Dorothy's Seat, Kilbury,
High Altitude Zoo, Khruptal, Kilbury, Hanumangarhi, etc.
Places of interest in Nainital: Naina Peak, 6 kms from the town, at an altitude of 2,610 m is the highest peak in Nainital. From the top one can get a bird's eye view of Nainital and a long uninterrupted view of the Himalayan peaks on a clear day. Naini lake is surrounded by thick forests of pine and deciduous trees. Dorothy's Seat, at an altitude of 2,292 m, is a memorial dedicated to an English lady. This spot also gives a bird's eye view of the Nainital town. This peak was earlier known as Ayarpatta Hill. High Altitude Zoo is 2 kms from the town and houses animals that live in high altitudes. Khruptal is 10 kms from the town and is an ideal place for anglers. The lake is supposed to be abundant in many variety of fish. Hanumangarhi, at an altitude of 1951 m, is 4 kms from the town, is a religious center. From here one can get magnificent views of the setting sun. State Observatory, at an altitude of 1951 m, is 5 kms from the town and conducts astronomical studies. It is also involved in tracking of artificial satellites. Places around Nainital: Other places of tourist interest are Bhowali, Sat Tal, Bhim Tal, Naukuchiia Tal, Ramgarh, Mukteshwar, Motia Pahar, etc. How to reach Nainital: Air: The nearest airhead is Pantnagar. Rail:The nearest railhead is Kathgodam (35 kms) connected to Lucknow, Agra and Delhi. Road: There are busses from Delhi, Agra, Bareilly, Dehradun, Haridwar, Meerut, Mussoorie, Ramnagar and other places in the state.
