Located at an altitude of 2050 m, Manali is situated along the banks of the Beas, close to the Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley. Manali is the gateway to Lahaul and Spiti. Legend has it that Manu, an ancient Hindu law-giver, stepped off a boat in Manali, to recreate human life after floods had destroyed the world.. One of the most popular places for honeymooners, Manali is the main holiday spot in the entire valley. The lovely countryside of forests and orchards, snow clad mountains, dense forests, lush valleys, exotic flowers and gurgling streams flowing through meadows make this a magical place Only after independence did it become accessible to the outside world. The long period of seclusion has served to enhance the peaceful and unhurried atmosphere inherent in the area. The Silver Valley is an untouched treasure trove of natural beauty, overflowing with exquisite flowers, luscious fruits, charming brooks, lush valleys with pristine white mountains forming the backdrop to this beautiful valley.

Places to visit in Manali:

Brighu Lake (4 Km.), Hadimba Devi Temple (2 Km.), Jagatsukh (6 Km.), Nehru Kund (6 Km.) & Arjuna's Guta (5 Km.), Tibetan Monastery and Vashisht Baths (3 Km.).

Excursions from Manali:

Kothi (12 Km.) - A small and picturesque town, on the way to the Rohtang Pass.

Solang Valley (13 Km.) - Offers fine views of glaciers and snow-capped peaks. It has good ski-slopes and is the venue of an annual winter Sports Festival.

Rahalla Falls (15 Km.) - Situated at the start of the climb to the Rohtang pass.

Rohtang Pass (51 Km.) - This is the only access to the Lahaul valley and is generally open from June to September each year, through trekkers can cross the pass a little earlier. A few kilometres away from the pass is the Sonapani glacier and slightly to the left is the twin peaks of the Gaypan.

Keylong (115 Km.) - Arid fields of barley and buckwheat surrounded by brown hills and snowy peaks, Keylong is the headquarters of the Lahaul and Spiti district.

Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation conducts the following tours during season only, from the Himachal Tourism Marketing Office, Manali.

  • Manali-Nehru Kund-Rahla Falls-Marhi-Rohtang Pass-Manali. Daily from 1000 hrs. to 1700 hrs.
  • Manali-Jagat Sukh-Naggar-Manali. Daily from 1000 hrs to 1630 hrs.
  • Manali-Vaishnodevi-Bhutti Weaver's-Parvati Valley-Kasol-Manikaran-Manali. Daily from 0900 hrs. to 1830 hrs.

Manali is famous for its Tibetan monasteries.

Manu Temple
Just near the Hadimba temple flows the Manalsu River, which culminates in the main Beas river. Across the Manalsu river is the original village of Manali that houses the ancient temple of the sage Manu.

Hadimba Temple
This temple is built around a natural cave, which enshrines the footprints of the goddess Hadimba. Hadimba was the wife of Bhima, one of the five great Pandava brothers of the Mahabharata, and later became the patron goddess of the Kullu royal family.

Arjun Gufa
It is five kms from Manali near the village of Prini. Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers, is believed to have performed his penance here.

Vashisht
Three kms from Manali is the village of Vashisht, which is renowned for its hot sulphur springs. The village is also the site of some old temples, dedicated to the great sage Vashisht, and to Lord Rama. The Himachal Tourism sulphur baths are just beyond these shrines.

Jagatsukh
The erstwhile capital of Kullu, Jagatsukh houses temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Sandhya Gayatri.

Solang Valley
Solang Valley is 14 kms from Manali.

Air - The nearest airport is at Bhuntar (50 km).

Rail - The nearest narrow gauge railhead is at Jogindernagar (135 km). The nearest broad gauge raiheads are at Chandigarh (310 km), and Ambala (355 km).

Road - The distance from Delhi via Mandi is 585 km, and from Simla the distance is 270 km. From Simla, Chandigarh and Delhi, luxury buses run by Himachal Tourism regularly ply to Manali.
