Lonavala is a hill resort, 118 kms south-east of Mumbai on the Mumbai-Pune line. Lonavala along with nearby Khandala hills offer a pleasant retreat for weekends .It also serves as a base to visit Karla and Bhaja caves. These caves date back to the 2nd century B.C and are one of the finest examples of rock temples by the Hinayana sect in India. Lohagad fort and Visapur fort are also nearby. Khandala gives a good view of the rain water fed waterfalls. Access to Lonavala: Air: The nearest airhead is Pune (66 kms). Rail: It lies on the Mumbai-Pune line. Other railheads are Pune (66 kms) and Mumbai (118 kms). Road: There are regular bus services from Pune and Mumbai. MAHABALESHWAR Mahabaleshwar is situated at an altitude of 1,372 m. It is the most popular hill resort of Maharashtra. The place derives its name from a deity, whose shrine is worshiped at the old Mahabaleshwar temple. One can have excellent views of the hills and valleys from any one of the 30 view points. At the base of Lingmala falls there is lake Venna with its crystal clear waters. There is provision for boating on this lake. Places of Interest around Mahabaleshwar: Panchgani, at an altitude of 1,328 m, is another hill resort a few kms away. It is situated in an excellent location towards the east of Mahabaleshwar. Pratapgarh, 24kms from Mahabaleshwar, is a formidable hill-fort and has an equestrian statue of Shivaji. Raigarh Fort, 80kms from Mahabaleshwar, was Shivaji's impregnable capital. It is situated on the top of a hill for which a ropeway is available during tourist season. Otherwise there are about 1,450 steps from foothill to the top of the fort. This was the place where he was crowned and where he died. Besides the fort are his Samadhi (Tomb) and the remains of his palace. There is Ganga Sagar lake and Jijamata Palace at Pachad. Access to Mahabaleshwar: Air: The nearest airhead is Pune (120 kms). Rail: The nearest railhead is Wahar, but Pune (120 kms) is more convenient. Road: There are buses from Mumbai (290 kms), Pune (120 kms) and other parts of the state.
