B. R. Hills in KarnatakaB. R. Hills or Biligiriangana Betta, at an altitude of 1,600 m, are 120 kms to the south-east of Mysore. These hills are picturesquely situated between the Cauvery and Tungabhadra rivers and stretch for about 16 kms from north to south. These hills are densely populated with deciduous trees, long grass, tall trees and wild animals. The surroundings are invigorating with fresh, clean air, chirping of birds and humming of bees. Honey of this place is very famous. During Vaisakha, in the month of April, the Ratha Festival is held here. Once in 2 years the local tribes make an offering of a large pair of slippers, made out of skin, to the deity. The climate here is pleasant throughout the year and the best time to visit is November to March. Places of tourist interest are the Biligiriangaswamy Temple, Biligiriangaswamy Temple Sanctuary, Kanchikote, Himvad Gopalswamy Hills. The Biligiriangaswamy Temple Sanctuary is spread across 540 sq. kms and is home to gaur, chital, sambar, elephants, tigers, panthers, bears and other species of birds and animals. Kanchikote are the ruins of an old fort, considered to have been built by Gangaraja of Shivanasamudra. Himvad Gopalswamy Hills are in the Mysore district and are situated in the verdant Western Ghats. These hills are a trekker's delight and a popular holiday resort. On top of the hills is the Gopalswamy Temple. Access to B.R Hills: Air: The nearest airhead is Bangalore. Rail: The nearest railhead is Mysore. Road: There are regular bus services from Bangalore, Mysore, Chamarajanagar and Yelandur.
