Population
Goa has the lowest birth rate of 16.8 births per 1000 as against the national average of 29 births per 1000. Migration from other states is phenomenal, more than about 10,000 migrants per year.

The four coastal talukas viz. Salcete, Bardez, Tiswadi and Mormugao, also the most developed in terms of economic growth, infrastructure and Tourism, are the most populous. They together account for nearly 64% of the state population with 7.45 lakhs out of 11.69 lakhs. Among 11 Talukas of Goa, Salcete Taluka is the most populated (219,897), while Canacona Taluka is the least populated (40,716).

Religion
Contrary to popular beliefs, Goa is a Hindu majority state. Next to Hindus are Christians (Roman Catholic). About 0.21 percent Buddhism Jainism, Sikhism etc. The scheduled caste population is about 2 per cent of the total population. There are no scheduled tribes population.

The density of population is 316 persons per square kilometre of area. Compared to all India average of 27.7, Goa is more densely populated. The density of population for per square kilometre of area in rural areas works out 208 persons and for urban areas 1247 persons.
