Sikri
Situated 40 kms away from Agra, Fatehpur Sikri is constructed in honour of saint
Sheikh Salim Chisti. Legend has it that heirless Akbar approached the saint to
enlist his prayers for a son who in turn told him that he would have 3 sons. In
thanksgiving Akbar constructed Fatehpur Sikri.
There are three sections to the city: the Royal Palace, outside the Royal Palace
and the Jami Masjid.
The Royal Palace has the Diwan-i-Aam; Diwan-i-Khas; Ankh Michauli or the Blind
man's buff; The Astrologers Seat; the Turkish Sultana's House or the Anup Talao
Pavilion; Dawlatkhana-i-khas; Khwabgah, the Palace of Dreams; Sunhara Makan
or the Christian wife Maryam's House and the airy 5-storied pavilion Panch Mahal.
Jodha Bai's Palace; the hanging Hawa Mahal; Raja Birbal's Palace are among the
other structures that are present here.
At the sacred section of Fatehpur Sikri, Jami Masjid is the King's Gate, the
Badshahi Darwaza; Jamat Khana Hall; the tomb of the royal ladies; the tomb of
Sheikh Salim Chishti and the tomb of Nawab Islam Khan.
The pathway between the Royal Palace and the Jami Masjid Complex leads to Hathipol,
nearby which are waterworks and a Hiran Minar, an unusual tower studded with
stone tusks to commemorate Akbars favourite elephant. The triumphal gate, Buland
Darwaza still stands tall at 41m heights.
