Built by Akbar in red sandstone and spread over 2.5 kilometres of land, the entrances
include the Delhi Gate facing the bazaar, the Amar Singh Gate in the south and
the Water Gate facing the river.
The crescent shaped Agra fort houses the Jahangiri Mahal; the
Sheesh Mahal also known as the Mirror Palace; Jodha Bai's Palace; the Khas Mahal
or the private palace used by the Emperor as a sleeping chamber, with cavities
in the room to insulate against the heat. To the left of the Khas Mahal is the
Mussaman Burj, a beautiful octagonal tower used as the Emperor's bedroom. Incidentally,
this was also Shah Jahan's deathbed. Other structures in the ramparts of the
fort are Diwan-i-Khas, the hall of private audience; Diwan-i-Am, the hall of
public audience and the Machhi Bhawan or Fish Enclosure where the Emperor met
visiting dignitaries.
The Moti Masjid also known as the Pearl Mosque has a Persian
inscription within the mosque that likens it to a perfect pearl. The Anguiri
Bagh; the Golden Pavilions; the Nagina Masjid, the private mosque of the ladies
of the court; the Meena Bazaar, where the ladies made purchases from the marble
balcony; the Hammam-e-Shahi or the Royal Bath only add to the splendour and
beauty of the fort.
