> Harrapan
Harrappan Civilization isone
of the oldest civilization. There are evidences of a flourishing economy and highly
developed state craft, trade and architecture. The first site was discovered only
in 1929, which is now a part of Pakistan Some other Harrapan sites have been discovered
in Western India. Some of the Indian sites are mentioned below where you can visit
while in India and witness the advance techniques of our ancestors.
DHOLAVIRA
This site was discovered only in 1990. Dholavira is located on Khadir Beit, an
island in the Great Rann of Kutch, in Gujarat. Locally it is known as Kotda. It
is almost as large as Harrappa or Mohenjodaro. Dholavira is one of the two largest
settlements in India and the fourth or fifth largest in the subcontinent, and
has some of the best preserved architecture. A tantalizing signboard with Indus
script has also been discovered.
Location & Access -
Dholavira could be reached from Bhuj (Kachchh), distance 140 kms, via Rapar. The
Road is comfortable. State Transport Bus services are available.
RAKHIGARHI
Rakhigarhi is a recently discovered, still unexcavated city in Haryana, India.
It is as large as Harappa and Mohenjodaro . It was excavated only in 1997. The
excavation yielded enormous archaeological evidences: a very good granary, similar
to the one at Banawali, was found. One of the cells had real barley. Lots of
other grains were also found. An animal sacrificial pit lined with mud bricks
and triangular and circular fire altars on the mud floor have been excavated.
Streets, lanes, and a covered drainage system of the Harappan type are also
there. Archaeologists found hearths containing evidence of shell burning for
preparing lime. A circular potter's kiln, waste products of marine shells, conch,
waste of semi precious stones, unfinished beads, all suggest some kind of crafts
specialisation of the people from Rakhigarhi. They also seem to have brought
lapiz beads from Afghanistan and conch from Kutchchh.
Location -
It is situated in the Hissar district of Haryana.
LOTHAL
Lothal is on the top of the Gulf of Cambay in Gujarat, India, near the Sabarmati
River and the Arabian Sea. A dockyard has been found here which suggests
that Indus Civilization had advanced maritime trade. The dock is said by some
to be the greatest work of maritime architecture before the birth of Christ.
A bead factory and a Mesopotamian seal has also been found. The attractive beads
of gems processed at Lothal were in great demand in the West. All in all the
Hrappan port town of Lothal enjoyed great prosperity owing to foreign trade
around 2350 BC. It was a busy industrial port importing copper and producing
bronze celts, fish-hooks, chisels, spearheads and ornaments; particularly the
beads and shells.
Location & Access -
Lothal is situated at a distance of 85 kms. from Ahmedabad via Bagodara on Ahmedabad
Bhavnagar highway. It could also be reached via Bhurkhi by rail.
DAIMABAD
It was discovered in 1958 and is a controversial site. The pottery and the hoard
of bronze chariots found here resemble the Indus artifacts, hence there is an
opinion that it is one of the Indus sites. Some scholars do not agree with this
view, but it surely is a pre-historic site in Maharashtra, worth a visit.
Location -
It is situated in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra.
