Culture of Goa This
land of ours has a rich culture that has been protected by its people against
insidious and often ruthless attempts by various invaders to mould it differently
or destroy it. Through the centuries, Goa remained a transit trading centre with
distant lands which brought people of different cultures; Venetians, Greeks and
Arabs. Then came the Portuguese who ruled for over 450 years and there is little
they did not try to change by sword or blandishments.
Many aspects of the catholic social structure and organisation remained similar to the Hindu caste based society. Many of the Hindu customs including superstitions and rituals to ward off evils are still retained. "Gauncars" who were converted retained their rights over the village communities. Conversion did not affect customs or way of life of the larger sections of the population. Folk art, religious festivals, classical music, traditional art forms, not only remained but also produced great exponents. Goans from all communities distinguished themselves in the fields of literature, education, traditional art and classical music, art, science, modern medicine as well as in banking and financial services. Portuguese ruled Goa for centuries. This resulted in an unique Goan culture,
a wonderful blend of Eastern and Western culture, which is very much evident
in it's towns and cities.
Besides all these the latin culture is very much evident in : Goa Carnival The Goa carnival is the time when Goa bursts out in color. Pranks , laughter
and merry makingmark the day. With the blessings of King Momo, the Greek God
of laughter and satire, the carnival begins with the loud cheers of "Viva
Carnival, Viva Goa!". Floats and boisterous mask revelers parade on
the streets of Panaji, the capital town of Goa. Typical to the Goan style, Carnival is full of celebration and excitement. It is quiet similar to New Orleans 'Mardi Gras', with songs, dances and huge parades.
