Varanasi or Banaras as Indians prefer to call, is one of the oldest and holiest
cities of India. It has it's own typical "Banarsee" culture which is
as enchanting as the city itself. The culture is reflected in artistic expressions,
daily activities and attitude of the people .
Art and music has been given a lot of importance in this town and there are Gharanas
(or the school of art) that have given rise to maestros like Ustad Bismillah Khan.
Folk songs like Kajali, Hori, Birah and Quwwali can also be heard here. Ramlila
or the dramatization of the epic Ramayana is a yearly event. It is performed in
every area of the town and is watched with much reverence. There are almost 60
Ramlilas performed and some are being performed for the last 400 years.
The 'Melas' or fairs are very important in Banaras. Here one can witness the
true colors of Banarsee culture. Wrestling forms an important part of these
fairs and people gather to cheer the 'pahelwans' or the wrestlers.
The people of Banaras are very fond of eating, hence the 'Halwais' or the sweet
shops are the craze here. Lazily mornings are begun with 'Kachauri & Jalebi'.
At some shops people wait for half an hour for their share of the breakfast.
In winters you can find 'Malaoi' being sold in small clay pots at every nook
and corner. 'Thandai' is a drink to be had in the evenings and no meal is complete
without 'Paan' or the betel leaves. 'Paan' is not just a mouth freshener here,
it is an art. 'Banarsee Paan' is a delicacy for every Indian. Serving 'Banarsee
Paan' is a matter of pride. Though not a single betel leaf grows in the region
the, art of Paan making has made it synonymous with Banaras.
Like 'Banarsee Paan' are the 'Banrasee Saris' - highly acclaimed and a piece
of art! Every Indian woman craves for at least one Banarsee sari. Marriages
are incomplete without them. The making of these saris is an art form, which
is restricted to the area itself.
Banaras has to be experienced on it's road, among 'Panwadis ' and 'Halwais';
amongst 'Pahelwans' practicing on the ghats;amongst temples and enchanting
maze of lanes; but the most unforgettable experience of all is an evening
boat ride on the River Ganges.
