AJANTA CAVES
Ajanta Caves are known all over the world for their fresco paintings. They were
discovered only in the 19th century. These paintings depict the story of Buddhism,
spanning the period from 200 BC to 650 AD. There are 29 caves built as secluded
retreats for the Buddhist monks.
Monks carved out these impressive figures using simple tools like hammer
and chisel . The cave house panels depicts stories from Jatakas, a rich collection
of tales about various incarnations of Lord Buddha, Boddhisattvas like, Padmapani
and Avalokiteshvara, nymphs and princesses.

ELLORA CAVES
There are 34 caves at Ellora. The architectures in these caves date back to
350 AD to 700 AD. They are dedicated to the three faiths Buddhism, Hinduism
and Jainism. The 12 caves to the south are Buddhist, the 17 in the center are
dedicated to Hinduism, and the 5 caves to the north are Jain. There are 4 caves
that house images of Buddhist and Hindu faiths under the same roof.
The Kailasa temple in Cave 16 is an architectural wonder. It is the representation
of the abode of Lord Shiva. In all probability, it is the largest monolith in
the world, the gateway, pavilion, assembly hall, sanctum and tower, are all
cut out of a single rock. It took almost a century to complete it. The sculpture
began from the top and sides unlike other temple structures that normally begins
from the base.
Every year in the third week of March, M T D C organizes the Ellora Festival
of Classical Dance and Music at the caves.
