Tranquebar IndiaCategory:- All India Travel Tourism > City Guide > Tamil Nadu > Tranquebar The tiny fishing village in the
state of Tamil Nadu, Tranquebar was originally known as Tarangambadi, 'The
Wave Village', the name by which it is once again known today. It was named
Tranquebar, by the Danes, who arrived here in the early 17th century, and
made it one of their major trading posts. This picturesque hamlet stands
testimony to a little known chapter of Indian history.
A treaty signed in 1620, between the local ruler and the King of Denmark, assured that the locals are committed always to defend and favour the subjects of the King of Denmark. Today, more than 370 years later, there is standing testimony to this assurance in the form of the beautiful New Jerusalem Church. Tranquebar today is like a Danish town 45 years ago. What To See Amongst the remnants of the past is the New Jerusalem Church, an elegant, white, tiled shrine bearing the royal crown on its facade and the year 1718. The structure also holds the grace of the first Danish missionary, Bartholomaus Zeigenbalg. The impressive gate that leads to King's Road is adorned by the royal Danish insignia. At one end of this high street which leads out to the sea, stands a memorial to the landing of the Danes. An old fort known as Dansborg Fort, built in 1620, is also a fine piece of architecture. Within the premises of the fort is a museum, which showcases marine exhibits, and a list of the Danish ships, which sailed into Tranquebar. The pillared houses built by the Danes are also equally interesting. How To Get There Air: Madras International Airport is 280 km away. Rail: Madras railhead is 280 km and Chidambaram railway station is only 50 km away. Road:Tourist taxis and buses are available from Madras. Tranquebar is easily accessible from the temple town of Chidambaram.
