252 km from Bangalore and 1,525 m above sea level, lies Madikeri, the district headquarters of Coorg - known as the Scotland of India. Madikeri has enchanted travellers with its misty hills, lush forests, coffee plantations, undulating streets and breathtaking views. It is also a trekker's delight with lovely mountain trails. Coorg is the land of coffee bushes, resplendent with red berries, cardamom fields profuse with white and purple flowers, old silver oak trees and sturdy, handsome people called the Coorgies.

What To See

Tipu's Fort
Tipu's Fort is the principal landmark of the region. Within the precincts of the fort, stands the palace of the Lingayat rulers. It is a simple yet elegant, double - storeyed structure, quite unlike the grand palaces, one sees elsewhere in India. Two elephants, built of cement and mortar stand in the compound.

Omkareshwara Temple
Built in 1820, it is a mixture of Islamic and Gothic styles.

Raja's Seat
This Seat was a favourite vantage point with the royalty, which offers a tremendous view of the misty blue hills, and valleys with green fields. The area around the Raja's Seat has been developed into a garden.

Abbey Falls
Eight kilometres from Madikeri is Abbey Falls, a great place for picnics.

Talacauvery
46 km away is Talacauvery, the source of the holy river Cauvery.
