The city of Jammu, the winter capital of the state, is the epicentre of
all socio-economic activities in the Jammu region.Discovered by Raja Jambu
Lochan in the 9th century B.C. located on the foothills of Himalayas with
the picturesque River Tawi flowing alongside.Jammu is popularly known
as the "City of Temples" due to the innumerable Temples and
shrines with glittering 'shikars' soaring the sky. It is also the base
for visiting various centres of tourist and pilgrimage interest in which
the region abounds. The most important pilgrimage centre is the shrine
of Mata Vaishnodeviji situated in the Trikuta hills at a distance of 60
kms from Jammu. Over 4.5 million pilgrims trek to this holy cave shrine
to pay obeisance to this most revered of Hindu deities every year.

Vaishno
Devi
The Holy Cave Shrine of Vaishno Devi is located in the north of India,
in a part of the lower Himalayas called Tirkuta Hills. It is a rather
small and narrow cave, which is used as a temple. It contains images of
the three dieties Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati. The cave is
a holy place and it is visited by pilgrims.One of the most visited pilgrim
sites in India, the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi is located in a cave,
amidst the folds of the Trikuta Bhagwati hill at a height of 5, 300 ft.,
in the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J & K). This cave temple is at
a distance of 61 kms from Jammu and the last 13 kms of the way have to
be negotiated on foot by the yatris, as the devotees are called. Once
at the entrance to the cave, the path turns into a narrow tunnel with
a cold stream named the Charan Ganga running through it. Ranvir
Temple
Built by Maharaja Ranbir Singh in 1883 A.D., this is the biggest Shiva
Temple in North India. It has one central 'Lingam' measuring seven and
a half feet in height (7.5ft) in black stone. There are huge idols of
Ganesha, Kartikeya and Nandi Bull.
Ragunath Temple
The most beautiful and splendid Temple complex in Northern India located
in the heart of the city. This complex consists of 17 Temples. There is
hardly any image of deity which is not represented here. This Temple is
mainly dedicated to Lord Rama.
Bawey Wali Mata
This famous temple of Maha Kali is inside the Bahu Fort overlooking the
river tawi. It is said that Bawey Wali Mata is the presiding deity of
Jammu. Every Tuesday and Sunday, pilgrims throng and jostle one another
to worship the Goddess.
Bahu Fort & Gardens
Situated 5 kms away from the city centre, Bahu Fort stands on
a rock face on the left bank of the river Tawi.The existing fort was more
recently improved upon and extended by the Dogra rulers. Inside, there
is a temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali. An extensive terraced
garden, known as Bagh-e-Bahu, has been developed around the fort.
Peer Khoh
Peer Khoh is a cave shrine located on the Circular Road, 3.5 kms from
the heart of the town. There is a naturally formed Shiva lingam in the
cave which is quite mysterious as neither its antiquity nor its cause
are known. Legend has it that the cave leads underground to many other
cave shrines and even out of the country.
Sudh Mahadev
This holy spot near Patnitop is situated at an altitude of 1225 m, about
120 kms from Jammu. Pilgrims visit the shrine on the full moon night of
'sawan' (July-August) to worship the 'Trishul' (trident) and a mace, which
are said to have belonged to Bheem, one of the five legendary Pandava
brothers.
Mansar Lake
Situated 62 kms from Jammu, Mansar is a beautiful lake fringed by forest-covered
hills, over a mile in length by half-a-mile in width. Besides being a
popular excursion destination in Jammu, it is also a holy site, sharing
the legend and sanctity of Lake Mansarovar.
Patni Top
About 112 kms from Jammu, the famous hill resort of Patnitop is perched
on a beautiful plateau, at an altitude of 2024 m, across which the Jammu-Srinagar
highway passes.
Purmandal
Often referred to as 'Chhota Kashi', its main temple is dedicated to 'Umapati',
while the other temples worship Lord Shiva. These ancient temples are
associated with the Shaivite Hindus of the Kashmir Valley. Regular bus
service connects the town with Jammu.
