Anantnag
Anantnag is one of the six districts of Kashmir Valley
and lies in the Southern side of valley. The district is bounded in the
south and east to the ranges of perpanchal mount and in the north and
west by Pulwama district. It is spread over an area of 3984 sq.kms. The
district consists of five Tehsils, Viz Ananthnag, Bijbehara, Doru, Kulgam
and Pahalgam, which was further being subdivided into 26 land revenue
circles and 146 Patwar halqas. There are 645 villages including 19 uninhabited
areas in this district. The nature has been generous in gifting the district
with places of unparallel beauty. The district can rightly boast of possessing
the largest number of health resorts in the whole State. Of them particular
mention may be made of Verinag, Kukernag, Achabal, Daksum and world famous
health resort of Pahalgam.
What to See
Amarnath Ji:
This is one of the revered pilgrimage sites of India tucked away in the
mighty Himalayas. Open only for a few months during the year, Amarnath
enshrines a natural Shivalingam of ice, and is reached after an arduous
trek through the mountains of Kashmir. Amarnath is an ancient pilgrimage
center. The Amarnath cave is located at a distance of 86 miles north east
of Srinagar, at a height of 13000 feet above sea level. Shiva is worshipped
here in the form of a Shivalinga shaped ice block, made by drops of water
oozing naturally in the cave.
Verinag :
Located 80 kms from Srinagar at an altitude of 1,876 m, the spring of
Verinag Also Known as Neel nag is believed to be the chief source of the
river Jhelum. The spring is situated at the bottomof hill covered by pine
trees, evergreen plants and chinars which even stand today along the spring
in magnificent size. Further to the east lies the remains of a pavilion
and baths built during the Mughal period. Wonderful and charming construction
upon the spring as well as its adjacent garden compel the visitors to
see it again and again. The construction on the banks of the spring as
well as the surroundings of rare design. The Mughal emperor Jahangir constructed
it and carvers for the purpose were brought from Iran. Construction date
of the spring is duly inscribed on the stone installed at the western
gate of entry towards the spring.
Kokernag :
The pleasure garden of serene beauty against the backdrop of high and
thick pine forests existed earlier on about 0.8 ha., in front of the famous
springs of pure, cool mineral water. In 1969 the garden was extended to
an area of about 26 ha. And converted into a Botanic garden besides being
a pleasure garden. New lawns have been laid and about one lakh ornamental
plants, trees, bushes, roses, as well as flora from the wild niches of
higher range has been planted. A separate section comprising of wild flora
of the valley is maintained in this garden. Modern effects like Japanese
bridges over the gushing water stream, water ponds, live garden seats,
topiary work etc are points of attraction the garden.
Achabal :
Achabal is an important tourist place about 8 kilometres away from Anantnag.
The place is fmous and attractivedue to an ancient spring surrounded by
a garden terraced and developed by the Mughals. The place has got some
historical background also. The upper portion of the garden is called
'Bag-e-Begum Abad' developed by Malika Noor Jehan Begum in 1620 AD and
renowned as Sahib Abad in which there was a Hamam (treasure of water)
getting heat from a logical lamp (Tosng).
Daksum :
Located in the dense forests, this scenic spot falls on the Anantnag-Symthan-Kishtwar
road. Daksum is a walker's paradise. Up the hills which are swathed in
coniferous trees, past gurgling brooks, the simple, haunting notes of
a flute will waft down to you from where an unseen shepherd tends his
flock. For in the hills surrounding Daksum, suddenly you will find yourself
in grassy meadows where sheep are taken to pasture.
Pahalgam :
This world famous hill station is 45 Kms. from the District Head Quarter
at Anantnag and located on the banks of river Lidder at an altitude of
7200 ft. from sea level. Pahalgam is one among the five tehsils of Anantnag
district and tehsil head quarters are located in the main town of Pahalgam.
Once a great tourist puller and favourite place for shooting of Bollywood
films is perhaps the best health resort in the country. Pahalgam also
serves as base camp for the famous Amarnath Ji Yatra.
