According to Hindu mythology, for the 'Prakris
hta Yagna', Lord Brahma, the creator - God of the Trinity,
chose a piece of land on earth, on which the three rivers - the Ganga,
the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati - would flow into a quiet confluence.
That land, blessed by the Gods, came to be called 'Prayag' or 'Allahabad',
as it is known today. It is one of the most sacred pilgrimage centres
of India.
Perhaps there are very few places parallel to Allahabad
whih is described with great reverence in ancient scriptures as Prayag
- Prayagraj or Teerthraj, i.e. 'the holiest pilgrimage centre'. Then,
with the added attraction of Kumbh Mela, Hailed as the world's largest
congregation of devotees, its glory has doubled.
Kumbh Mela's history originate from the beginning of the creation. Mythology
has it that the Gods and the Demons once churned the oceans in the search
of the nectar Amrit of immortality. As soon as the pitcher containing
nectar was retrieved, a struggle started between the two wrest control
of the same. During this, the picher of amrit was kept at four different
places Prayag (Allahabad) Haridwar, nasik and ujjain making them hallowed
and sacred. since then, when planets come in a perticular position, Kumbh
Mela is celebrated at these four places. when jupiter is in Taurus and
Sun is in the Capricon in the month of Magh, Kumbh Mela is held at Allahabad
after every twelve years. In this series Ardh kumbh Mela is also held
in the 6th year after Kumbh mela wheread Magh Mela (Mini Kumbh) is held
annually on the banks of the Sangam.

What
to See
Sangam
The holy place SANGAM is the place where the three holy rivers GANGA,
YAMUNA, and the mythical SARASWATI merge into one. It offers facinating
view at sunrise and sunset. At SANGAM few drops of nector is believed
to be fallen making the water truely magical. The place comes alive, during
the Kumbh Mela and the Ardh Kumbh, attracting millions of devotees from
all across the country. The Sangam is the site for important fares and
festivals, the year around.
Allahabad Fort
Built by Emperor Akbar in 1583 A.D., the fort stands on the banks of the Yamuna,
near the confluence site. In its prime, the fort was unrivalled for its design,
construction and craftsmanship. This huge, majestic fort has three magnificent
galleries, flanked by high towers.
Patalpuri Temple
the under ground temple inside the fort, with the AKSHAYA VATT or immortal tree
is said to have been visited by Lord RAMA.
Ashoka Pillar
This gigantic Ashoka pillar, of polished sandstone, stands 10.6 m high,
dating back to 232 B.C. The pillar has several edicts, and a Persian inscription
of Emperor Jahangir inscribed on it, commemorating his accession to the
throne.
Hanuman Temple
The Hanuman Temple is also near the SANGAM, houses the largest unique reclining
image of LORD HANUMAN it is believed that the river GANGA rises during the annual
floods to touch the feet of the image before receding back.
NAG VASUKI TEMPLE
In Dara Ganj on the Bank of river Ganga is dedicated to NAgraj Vasuki. Adjacent
to the temple is an unique big statue of Bhishm Pitamah in lying posture.
Mankameshwar Temple
Situated near Saraswati Ghat, on the banks of the Yamuna, this is one of the
famous Shiv temples of Allahabad.
Anand Bhawan
The erstwhile ancestral home of the Nehru family, the Bhawan has witnessed several
epoch - creating events of the freedom struggle. The main building houses a
museum, displaying the memorabilia of the Nehru family.
Jawahar Planetarium

experience worth a lifetime.
All Saints Cathedral
Dedicated to the memory of people of all ages and places, who have kept their
faith in the Almighty, this Cathedral is one of the finest cathedrals, in the
country. Designed more than a century ago, by Sir William Emerson, the structure
has some truly exceptional glass murals.
SHANKAR VIMAN MANDAPAM
This Temple is near to the Holy SANGAM, 130 ft in height and having four floors,
and idols of Kumarail Bhatt, JagadGuru Sahnkracharaya, Kamakshi Devi and Tirupati
Balaji, Yogshashastra ShastraYog Linga adorn the interior.
Festivals
Kumbh Mela
One of the largest congregations of devout Hindus from all over the world,
the Kumbh Mela is held once every 12 years, on the banks of the Sangam. A holy
dip in the sacred waters, and offerings to the Sun-God, are believed to cleanse
the soul.
Ardh Kumbh Mela
The half Kumbh, this festival is held once every six years, on the banks
of the Sangam.
Dussehra
Dussehra time in Allahabad is an experience, unrivalled by any other in
the rest of northern India. During this period, in the evening and at night,
beautifully decorated tableau are taken out from different localities, depicting
various scenes from Indian mythology.
How
to Get There
By Air: The nearest airports are Varanasi, Kanpur
and Lucknow.
By Rail: The city has direct rail connections with important
cities like Delhi, Calcutta, Patna, Gwalior, Meerut, Chennai, Mumbai, Varanasi
and Guwahati.
By Road: Allahabad, on National Highway 2 and 27, is
connected to the rest of the country by good, motorable all-weather roads.
