Few can claim such a long and continuous history,
ranging from 6 th century BC to the present times as is being maintained
by the city of Patna. Endowed with a very fertile stretch of land
on the southern bank of river Ganges, the city is amongst one of
the world’s oldest living capital cities and the seat of supreme
power in erstwhile India. Many great rulers have ruled the Indian
subcontinent from this very city. The city is also home to one of
the most important parts of the ‘Buddhist Circuit’ in
Bihar and forms the ultimate base to explore all the other places
in this circuit.
Patna’s origin goes back to the year 493
BC, when the king of Magadh, Ajatshatru fortified a small village-‘Pataligrama’
on the high banks of Ganges. His son Uday established the city,
which latter came to be known as Pataliputra. The city attained
its culmination under the reign of the Maurya Dynasty and became
one of the most important capital cities in the subcontinent.
There are quite a few places of tourist interest
in Patna. A number of temples, mosque, excavation sites, pilgrimage
centers and other important historical sites in and around the city
will take one down into the realm of an unsurpassable past. The
‘Mahatma Gandhi Setu’, offers the best view of Patna
City. It’s one of the longest bridges in the world that runs
7.5 km long over river Ganges, on the west of the city. |
