The city of Indore is a treasure trove of great
historical monuments and an important industrial city, built by
a brave Holkar Queen- Rani Ahilyabai. Set by the side of ‘Narmada
River Valley’ in the extreme west of Madhya Pradesh, this
beautifully laid city is an amalgamation of different styles of
architecture.
Indore derives its name from the 18 th century
Indreshwar Temple, built by the local landlords of that time. Initially
established as a trade center, Indore became the capital city of
the Holkars. The city grew in intensity and dimension under the
reign of Queen Ahilyabai, who ruled Indore from 1767 to 1795. Later
Indore became the headquarters of the British Central India Agency
and the summer capital of central India.
There are several tourist attractions in Indore.
Among the most important sites, the Old Palace or Rajwada is a remarkable
architecture worth visiting. Situated near the bustling Khajuri
Bazaar in the old city. It reveals an amazing blend of French, Mughal
and Maratha styles of architecture. Inside the palace complex there
are gorgeous garden with fountains, waterfall, and 11 th century
sculptures.
Another major attraction of the city is the Kanch
Mandir or the temple of mirrors or Seth Hukamchand Temple. Every
wall, ceilings, floor, pillars, and doors of this temple are inlaid
with glass and the plain exteriors contain intricate mirror work
on the inside. Other attractions include the Lal Bagh Palace, the
Chhatri Bagh, the Bada Ganapati Temple, Gandhi Hall, Museum, Gita
Bhawan, Annapurna Temple, Bijasen Tekri and the Gomtagiri Jain temples. |
