Ahmedabad, the city of rich Gujarati tradition
and once the abode of the apostle of peace and non-violence- Mahatma
Gandhi, is known for its booming textile industry and premier educational
institutes today. The city makes a great tourist destination with
its unique style of architecture, delicious cuisine and amusement
parks.
Founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah in AD 1411, the city
became an important business center later during the Mughal period.
When the British came to India, they set up many textile mills here
and now the city is ranked amongst the top two industrialized city
in western India.
Ahmedabad is world famous for the Mahatma Gandhi’s
Ashram. The Ashram hosts a large number of original manuscripts
that were written by the great leader Mahatma Gandhi. During the
Freedom Movement Ahmedabad played a vital role and is witnessed
to many striking events that shook up the Indian history at that
time.
The Walled City is another attraction of Ahmedabad.
Within the City there are a number of tourist points that speak
volumes about the city’s association with a glorious past.
It boasts of a number of ‘pols’ or traditional colonies
date back to the British Period.
Among the major monumental attractions of the
city the mosque of Ahmed Shah, Balvatika, Teen Darwaza and Bhadra
Fort, Daria Khan's Ghummat, Siddi Sayyad's Mosque, Gita Mandir,
Swami Narayan Temple, Hathisinh Mandir, Jhulta Minar, and Jumma
Masjid are worth visiting.
Kankaria Lake, Rani Sipri's Mosque and Tomb, Rani
Roopmati Mosque, Rauza of Shah Alam, Siddhi Sayyad Mosque, and Dada
Hari Vav are some of the other must visit tourist sites of the city.
